My Top 3 Creative TV Ads… And What Sets Them Apart?

In the world of advertising, certain campaigns go beyond their commercial intent, leaving a lasting mark on our memories.

In this blog post, I'll delve into my top 3 TV ads of all time, exploring the creativity and impact that make these advertisements stand out.

3. Apple's Bounce - Defying Gravity with AirPods

Securing the third spot on my list is Apple's "Bounce" ad, a blend of moody black and white cinematography and uplifting Jaz.

The ad, introducing the new wireless AirPods, takes us on a journey through city streets seamlessly turning into trampolines. This creative masterpiece perfectly captures the sense of freedom that comes with going wireless.

What sets this ad apart is its execution without the use of wires or CGI.  In fact, almost all of the gravity-defying movements in the ad are made using only effects. The actor in the film is dance choreographer and acrobat Yoann Bourgeois, who is actually bouncing off trampolines painted to look like the city streets.

Apple's "Bounce" showcases how a TV ad can be both technically innovative and emotionally captivating.

2. IRN-BRU Snowman Advert - A Scottish Christmas Tradition

In my second spot is the IRN-BRU Snowman Advert, a heartwarming Christmas tale that first graced screens in 2006 and returned with a sequel in 2017.

This advert reimagines the iconic Christmas story of the Snowman, infusing it with a Scottish twist. The narrative unfolds as a young Scottish lad and the Snowman engage in a playful battle over a can of IRN-BRU.

What makes this ad a standout is its ability to seamlessly weave together Scottish culture and childhood nostalgia. Featuring famous Scottish landmarks, the IRN-BRU Snowman Advert creates a strong connection between the soft drink and the rich history of Scottish landmarks and culture.

It's a rare gem that brings together holiday cheer, child nostalgia and cultural pride.

1. Guinness Surfer Ad - A Wave of Artistic Brilliance

Claiming the top spot is the iconic 1999 Guinness Surfer ad, a campaign that transformed the stout's slow pour into a cinematic event.

This ad, a legitimate work of art, encapsulates the Guinness slogan, "good things come to those who wait." The narrative unfolds as surfers patiently wait for the perfect wave, creating a breathtaking visual metaphor for the slow pour of Guinness.

This ad has rightfully earned its place in advertising history, winning more awards than any other ad campaign. Its artistic brilliance, emotional resonance, and clever storytelling make it a timeless masterpiece.

The Guinness Surfer ad proves that a compelling narrative can elevate a brand, turning a perceived product drawback into a captivating and memorable experience.

Honorable Mentions: Who Else Deserves to Be on This List?

While these three ads hold a special place in my heart, there are many other remarkable campaigns that have left a big mark on the world of advertising.

Ads like Coca-Cola's "Holidays Are Coming,” and Old Spice's "The Man Your Man Could Smell Like" deserve honourable mentions and have made significant contributions to the realm of memorable and impactful TV advertising in their own right.
